In a one-way or multi-way replication method, one or moresource databases, specified preset schema, or even specific segments withineach database can be replicated to one or more destination databases. As aresult, reads and writes in both the source and destination databases can behandled concurrently. A distributed database environment is created by alldatabases participating in the replication mechanism.

Advanced Replication, in a logical sense, provides a hotstandby database. Unlike in a conventional standby database scenario, thetarget database is open and available for speedy failover if the sourcedatabase fails. The objective should ideally be kept on a separate system in aremote location for disaster recovery.
